Dear Kids: Day 1 March Slice of Life Story Challenge

My Two Writing Teachers colleagues and I are hosting the 13th Annual March Slice of Life Story Challenge, in which hundreds of teachers participate in posting a story per day.

Dear Kids,

You probably don’t realize this, but your dad and I are AWESOME. We are not like other, boring, old parents that don’t do anything cool. We are actually really fun and do really amazing things.

Like today, your dad came in THIRD in an actual extreme skiing competition. For real!

The two of you rode the Madonna 1 lift all the way to the top with your father and I. Lily rode with me, and Jackson rode with Dad. It’s a long, cold, twenty-minute lift ride, and Lily complained the entire way up about the plan to ski down Drifter in order to watch the competition (she wanted to ski something harder, and more awesome). Even after I gave her Skittles — still complained!

But… as we skied down boring old Drifter, something nice happened. Usually Lily shoots out ahead, skiing super fast, while I linger behind to make sure Jackson is okay. But today, Lily said, “Follow me buddy!” and gave Jackson tips on how to get through the moguls, and where to find the best little bumps and jumps. I just hung back and watched the two of you rip down steep terrain like two little shredders.

We arrived at the competition finish line just in time to watch your dad ski his run. The two of you were occupied with sliding down a bank on your butts, so I don’t think you actually saw him — but I didn’t sweat it, because you’ve watched your dad ski runs just like that a million times before and you were getting along so well. Nobody was complaining.

Your dad and I are so cool, so unlike other parents, that we honestly didn’t even think much about the death-defying flying through the air your dad had just done. When he got to the bottom, where everyone was watching, I said, “Nice job honey,” and then we all skied one more run and we took the two of you home.

Later, after baths and dinner and everything else, your dad got a text from one of our friends. “Dude you came in third. Why didn’t you stay for the podium?”

Ha! That’s just how cool we are. It didn’t even cross our minds to stay for the podium because we were so excited about the two of you skiing together and getting along that winning the competition was the furthest thing from our minds. So, now you know. Your parents are awesome.

Love,

Your Mom

Goes By Fast: Slice of Life Story Challenge

When I got home from work today, I found Jackson playing with legos in the living room - no pants on - spinning a lego “Spinjitsu” top repeatedly.

“What’s up, sweetie?” I asked.

“Spinjitsu!” he replied.

“Uh huh… Hey, where are your pants?” I asked.

“What pants? I don’t wear pants,” he said, grinning.

He gave his neon green lego spinner another twist. We both watched as it spun across the floor, wondering how long it could last. It spun and spun, at first gaining speed, then slowing, then finally wobbling wildly out of control before toppling.

“I thought it would last longer,” he said.

“Me too, honey. Me too,” I said.

Every Tuesday my Two Writing Teachers colleagues and I host the Slice of Life Story Challenge. Teachers from all around the world participate in sharing a story each week. My current writing goal is to create a comic each week. To see all my comics, click here.

Please note: My slice for this week isn’t a story! But I do hope that by the end of the summer, these books will sum up the story of how I spent my summer. It’s an aspirational slice of life.

Pond Skimming: Tuesday Slice of Life Story Challenge

Once again, I am learning from mentor texts. Grant Snider’s layouts and style heavily influenced the look of this comic and others I have created. And the book The Gutsy Girl, by Caroline Paul (writer) and Wendy MacNaughton (artist) continues to be the perfect mentor text for me, for both the content (adventures!) and the style (funny!).

Writing Time: Tuesday Slice of Life Story Challenge

This week, I drew inspiration from another of my favorite mentor authors. Wendy MacNaughton’s work inspires me to use comics to make sense of the chaos of daily life.
